Intermediate Crazy Quilting Class 102 - Acid Dyes

Let me just say, I am really enjoying Kathy Shaw's Intermediate Crazy Quilt Course 102: Using Acrylic Paints, Dyes, Inks, etc. (The course name is abbreviated to ICQC 102 and you may read more about it on Kathy's blog here. Registration for this course will open again on August 25th and the course is free.)

This was my first time dying silk ribbons, rayon/nylon velvet ribbon and rick-rack and I really had fun! I purchased all of these from the dyeable fabrics/ribbons products at Vinatage Vogue. (You may check them out here. I liked that the ribbons were tied in a manner that made them easy for me to dye in variegated colors.) They are still wet in the photo above. Thinking of the next under-the-sea themed round robin I will be in, I chose to use blue-green and purple shades.

I also played around with some rayon lace motifs and a rayon trim. (I purchased several of the motifs from Thearica at Crazy Quilting Supplies. I found a roll of the flower trim at JoAnn Fabric. And, I believe Cathy's Crazy By Design on Etsy offers some rayon motifs and she has a 25%-off clearance sale going on right now.) Some of these were submerged in the dye and others were painted with a fine-tipped paintbrush. (I think the second butterfly is my favorite in this group.) I submerged the flower trim in yellow and planned to paint the petals a different shade, but the color ran into the yellow centers. So, I opted to leave the majority of the trim yellow for a future crazy quilt project.

After letting everything dry overnight, I ironed them all.  Some of the colors lightened a bit more as they dried.

I look forward to using the motifs and trims on future crazy quilting blocks.

And, I am already thinking of ways to incorporate these ribbons and trims into the upcoming under the sea round robin.

I am so glad I took this class from Kathy! I have learned a lot and look forward to playing around with more acid dyes in the future.

Thanks for stopping by!

It looks like you had a great time. I like that second butterfly, too. I almost always paint my motifs, except I haven't in a long time. I haven't done any girly CQ, so I've had no need for them. It might be 5 years since I did any. I bought a lot of thread to dye, and then I never did any of it. I think I have a hank of dyers ribbon, too! This post reminded me of how much fun I had doing it, but time never seems to last long enough for everything!
