TAST 35: Threaded Cable Chain Stitch

This week the Take A Stitch Tuesday (TAST) lesson at Pintangle.com taught the Threaded Cable Chain Stitch. I found the trickiest part of this stitch to be choosing the right project to add it to. I did not want to put it on any project that would be washed or might allow the threaded stitches to be pulled out of shape in the future.

I opted to add this seam to the last block I need to embellish from the first Crazy Quilting International Under the Sea Do Your Own Block Round Robin I participated in during 2015. (The post sharing those blocks when they returned home is here.) 

The cable chain stitch above was created using a strand of DMC #4215 size 5 pearl cotton.

DMC #4250 size 5 pearl cotton floss was threaded through the cable chain stitch. (I liked the way it looked after the first step of lacing and thought about leaving it as it was in the picture above.)

I love the texture this stitch created on the block!

TAST Stitch 24

TAST Stitch 24: Interlaced Cable Chain Stitch

My first attempt with the Interlaced Cable Chain Stitch was worked as a seam on a black crazy quilt block that I have been embellishing with pinks, greens, and white.

Because the seam met another seam at an angle, it was a little tricky. However, my biggest problem was working my base cable chain stitches free-hand. They were not as even as I hoped, so the lacing was not as even as I would have liked. 

So, I decided to try the stitch on a piece of 28-count evenweave. I learned that I really need to practice the cable chain stitch a bit more to master even stitches. However, the lacing was fun and I do love the look of the completed seam. (My apologies for the photo. My camera does not want to focus on white much these days...)

TAST Stitches 22, 23 & a Gift Seam

These little wheels are fun, but I will admit I need more practice! I was very thankful for Sharon's tip to add more spokes (placing the stitches closer together) if they did not sit flat.

TAST Stitch 23: Cable Chain Stitch

Well... I do need to make my stitches a little more even. Perhaps a bit more planning before beginning my letter H would have clued me in on the number of stitches and better spacing. It was a fun stitch!

Sometimes the trickiest part of TAST for me is figuring out the best way to work the stitch into one of my current projects. In this case, I combined the cable chain stitch and the buttonhole wheel to add a motif section to a Christmas fabric postcard.  I think they made a fun addition. 

Oh! Beneath the words, "Ho! Ho! Ho!" do you see the little green gifts tied with red ribbon? Those were created using one of Sharon B.'s crazy quilting templates (from Set 2) and a few past TAST Stitches. 

I am not affiliated with these templates, but I did agree to review my experiences with them. Using a quilting chalk pencil, I traced the smaller squares (pictured on the template above) along the seam. After my first few attempts, I found it easiest to make a red straight stitch down the center of the square and green satin stitches on either side of that red stitch. (Using size 8 perle cotton, it took 3 green stitches to the left and to the right of the red stitch to fill the square.) Then 2 red detached chain stitches were added to the tops to create bows. It was quite fun!
