SK Effects of Caffeine - SAL Update 3

906 stitches were added to my Heaven and Earth Designs Storykeep Effects of Caffeine cross-stitch since my February 3rd update. (You may see the artwork this piece is based upon here.)

As this is my lunch time project, my goal is only 100 stitches a week; so, I am thrilled with the progress. It is SO close to a page finish that I have been putting some evening and weekend time into it, too.

I will be honest, the golds and reds make the title difficult to decipher when stitched. There are other Randal Spangler storykeep projects with books in different colors that are easier to read when stitched. So far, this one reads:

INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS OF CAFFEINE ON

It is a bit easier to read when viewed at an angle.

Page 1 should be completed by our next SAL update on March 17th. The dragon begins on the bottom of page 2, so I am quite motivated work on this piece! I just love Randal Spangler's artwork.

This is how the piece looked on February 3rd.

February 4th - 23rd: Stitched 16 days for a total of 8.58 hours.

6,391 of 23,660 stitches are complete.

The project is 27.01% complete. (It was 23.2%.)

Page 1 is 98.62% complete. (It was 86.15%.)

Page 2 is 1.77% complete.

In my last post, several of you asked how I track my progress. I am afraid I am a bit of a nerd. I like numbers and spreadsheets. So, before I begin a full coverage chart, I create a spreadsheet. There is a column for each page with the number of stitches in each 10x10 grid. At the top of the column, I include the date and the time spent stitching. At the bottom of the column, I add formulas to calculate the number of stitches added that day, the total number of stitches added to the project, the percentage of the page completed, the percentage of the chart completed, and the average number of stitches added per hour. After I stitch each day, I copy the information from the day before and update the number of stitches remaining in the grids I worked on that day. Setting the spreadsheet up takes some time, but the daily updates take about 5 minutes. Seeing the numbers progress keeps me motivated, so it is worth the time to me. :)

I do hope you will visit the others that are participating in this Stitch Along (SAL.) Links to their blogs are below. I want to welcome Sharon, our newest SAL member!

23,000 stitches - oh my goodness - No wonder you break it down into smaller chunks. Great progress!

Excellent progress Renee! I see on your sidebar that you have several projects going. Do you work on them all concurrently, or focus on on at a time? Your spreadsheet sounds fun! ( bit of a geek myself!)

Wow Renee that is so cool how you map your progress that way. This is a very interesting piece and I am looking forward to seeing it next time!

I can understand how motivated you are to get to work on the dragon. I just looked at the finished design. I think he'll be fun to stitch.

Great progress since last check-in. I can see why you can't wait to get to the dragon--He's so vivid compared to what you've been working on.

Yes you have definitely made wonderful progress as the numbers will prove. I read your system with great interest. I've never thought of tracking by the numbers as such. It must give you much satisfaction that way. Happy Stitching, and counting. :)

Wow! So many stitches this time! I love how you track things; I have a big cross stitch pattern in the UFO pile that I might try that for. But first these swans must be stitched!

I´m impressed of your work. Not just the stitching, but all the work you do around it, counting stitches and so on! And it´s a beautiful embroidery!

I guess that's what people to HAED designs for, so many crosses give result to really nice gradients, but it must be quite a lot of confetti :D

Your progress is amazing.

I started a HAED for my daughter some times ago and really must get it on to my SAL list soon, but I am going to try some easier ones first. I only have about 3 or 4 hundred stitches done on that one. You are making excellent progress.

I love looking at the Spangler designs. They're so cute. I really wouldn't have the patience to stitch one though so I'm in awe of people who can.
I love a good spreadsheet too. I have an ever-growing one to track my books & reading.

G Adrian, thank you so much!
Lindashee, thankfully this piece has some solid blocks of color to help balance out the heavy confetti areas. :)
Stitchingranny, thank you. I'd love to hear which HAED design you were working on.
Carole, I agree - Spangler's designs are so cute! Ooh... a spreadsheet to track the books I read is an idea that had not occurred to me. I'd love to know what type of data you track in yours.

I am so impressed by some of the intricate charts people in this group undertake! You have made a lot of progress - well done!

Great progress!

You're doing great! I wonder - if the letters aren't showing up as much as you'd like, if you could 'highlight' them with a grey straight stitch - sort of creating a shadow effect while serving the purpose of making them stand out more? I wouldn't use black because I think it would be too stark. Just a thought!!
