CQI Under the Sea Round Robin #2 - Barbara Nicki Lee's Completed Block!


On Saturday, I finished embellishing this block for Barbara Nicki Lee Seavey.

Above is a picture of the block before adding embroidery.

You may recognize the treasure chest from my Take a Stitch Tuesday (TAST) post last week. The chest was inspired by Carolyn Phillips' tutorial to paint a treasure chest published in the Summer 2015 edition of Crazy Quilt Quarterly.  (It looks so small for a 12-hour labor of love, doesn't it?!)

I added some drizzle-stitched seaweed, French knot coral and fly-stitched sea grass to this under-the-sea scene.

This little fish was added with the help of waste canvas. The pattern was adapted from the Tropical Waterline cross stitch chart designed by Michele Johnson and published by True Colors Cross Stitch in 1992. (The link will take you to the chart on Amazon. The jelly was created with a detached buttonhole stitch and drizzle-stitched tentacles.

A seahorse charm completed the block.  This was such a fun block to watch come together and I hope Barbara Nicki Lee is happy with it!

    Another beautiful block. I am inspired by all of the different techniques and stitches you used. A lot of great texture in this block. Lovely.

    A lovely block, Renee. I have used drizzle stitch for my doll's fringe, but l haven't tried detached buttonhole stitch yet - I can see it has to go on my list. Your stitching is amazing! Barbara xx

    Fabulous, Renee. I can't imagine how many hours you have in that, if the treasure chest was 12 all by itself. What a work of art and love. Lucky Nicki Lee. I love the cross-stitched angelfish, too. Or is it a clownfish? Either way, I really like that.

    Thank you! I had a hard time thinking of something to add to the center of the block and thought about the Tropical Waterline cross-stitch chart in my stash. I had a lot of fun with this block!

    Everything you added is perfect for the theme. I especially like the cross-stitch fish using waste canvas (my current favourite thing to do). After seeing your drizzle-stitch I know it's something I need to learn to do.
