TAST 39: Coral Stitch
I have fallen behind with my TAST stitches. This week, I managed to make two flower stems with the coral stitch.
I traced a half-heart shape from Sharon B.'s Crazy Quilt Templates Set 1 onto the muslin backing on this piece and used it as a guide to stitch this stem using size 12 green pearl cotton and coral stitch worked from the top to the bottom. Next, I added detached chain stitched leaves.
Adding buttons always feels outside of my comfort zone. I have had this one for some time. I am not sure how I feel about it with this flower stem, but it was fun to try none-the-less!
The stem on this flower motif added to my Crazy Quilt Journal Project (CQJP) 2016 February block was also created with a coral stitch. This one was made with size 8 green pearl cotton and was worked from the bottom to the top.

These flowers look so beautiful. It is amazing to see how many different stitches there are and what you can do with them.
Aren't the templates useful? Even half a pattern (like the heart) makes a beautiful stem. Detached Chain stitches and buttons are good partners of any stitch that makes up a flower's stem.
Very nice! I struggle with how to use buttons on my crazy quilt blocks.
I wonder if you might be happier with the button (top photo) if you were to add some more of the little green leaves around it? Just a thought. Or....what about adding a bit more vine - perhaps anther stem or two sort of following the curve of the one you have now? It's a beautiful button anyway.
In the case of these flowers, I think the buttons work really well. I don't ever use shank buttons, but buttons with holes can make a wonderful addition to a quilt. It's an adjustment, and I don't use them often myself, but in places like these flowers, perfect! Coral is another stitch I'd forgotten about. I wonder if my tree trunk needs a coral stitched vine twisting around it.
